Did you make the Spot Woven Dishcloth that was knitted flat? If not, you can get the instructions here (available free). In the previous article Spot Weaving for other Kitchen Accessories, there are ideas for other Spot Woven projects that are knitted flat.
To expand the possibilities for spot woven projects even more, here are instructions for the in-the-round version. This version is useful for sturdy circular projects without side seams (e.g. a tote bag / purse) or double-sided fabric (e.g. a hot pad / potholder).
Overview
For the flat version, you worked with 3 ends of yarn: 1 end in color A and 2 ends in color M. These 3 ends were worked 1 row each in a rotating sequence (i.e. what I call the troika technique).
However, for the in-the-round version, you use only 2 ends: 1 end in color A (worked for 1 round) and 1 end in color M (worked for 2 rounds).
Spot Woven Pattern Stitch In the Round
With accent color yarn (A), cast on an even number of stitches.
Join for circular knitting, taking care to not twist. Place marker for end of round.
Drop A and attach main color yarn (M).
Round 1: With M, * k1, sl 1 wyib; rep from * to end of round.
Round 2: With M, * sl 1 wyif, k1; rep from * to end of round.
Tip: You are always knitting the slipped stitches of the previous round, and slipping the other stitches.
Round 3: With A, * k1, sl 1 wyif; rep from * to end of round.
Round 4: With M, * sl 1 wyif, k1; rep from * to end of round.
Round 5: With M, * k1, sl 1 wyif; rep from * to end of round.
Round 6: With A, * sl 1 wyif, k1; rep from * to end of round.
Round 7: With M, * k1, sl 1 wyif; rep from * to end of round.
Round 8: With M, * sl 1 wyif, k1; rep from * to end of round.
Repeat rounds 3 – 8 until desired length and having completed 2 successive rounds of M. (Note: if you aren’t quite to length yet that is ok as you will still have 1 more round to work plus the bind off round.)
With A, complete the last round of spots as follows depending on which round you worked last –
If the last round you worked was round 5: * sl 1 wyif, sl 1 wyib; rep from * to end of round.
If the last round you worked was round 8: * sl 1 wyib, sl 1 wyif; rep from * to end of round.
(Note: You don’t do any actual knitting on this round; you are just weaving the A yarn through the round of stitches to give a nice ending to the pattern stitch.)
With A, bind off in knit stitch.
Have fun!
