Stockinette Lace Knitting

Even though this month’s Lace-edged Doily project uses finer thread and tinier needles than last month’s lace-edged towel project, there are a couple of things about the doily project that you might be find make it easier to offset the challenge of finer and tinier.

All lace patterning is on RS rows only

If you remember what we talked about in the Bit-size Tutorial Lace Knitting vs. Knitted Lace, you’ve probably noticed that the edging pattern for this doily project falls into the lace knitting category.

” … lace knitting is defined as a knitted fabric where there is a row of plain knitting worked alternately with a row of holes made in various ways.”

Why this can make knitting this type of lace easier: Attention needs to be paid mostly to only the RS rows. The WS rows are essentially “rest” rows.

Functionally by definition, there is single-sided use of a doily (i.e. it would usually be laid RS up on a surface where the underside would not be seen). This makes stockinette lace appropriate to this type project; i.e. there is a definite right side and wrong side.

Why this can make knitting this type of lace easier: The resulting smooth fabric makes “reading” your knitting easier on the RS rows where you are having to pay more attention to the pattern.

If you are still easing into knitting lace with fine thread and tiny needles, I hope this month’s doily edging is helping you along your way. And even if you are already experienced, I hope you are enjoying the project!

Right now I am using Knit Picks Gloss Lace in the Mermaid color on size 4 needles to knit a cowl for my daughter in law’s Christmas present. She appreciates what I make for her and the grandson. Daughter and grandson that live with me do not appreciate what I make for them . I frequently find it on the floor being tramp[led by her , her son and the dogs. So I have resolved not to make them anything else .

    Jackie,
I always enjoy seeing something of yours!! You have the most beautiful patterns and projects I’ve ever seen. I love to go over your website whenever I feel the need to expose myself to beautiful things.

I’ve made a few shawls and other things and got your Lace Wrap pattern…but you can never learn too much about knitting.

One note…I did sign up for your Birthday Club and didn’t see anything in July. But I so enjoy these lace ‘lessons’.

Thank you so much for sharing!!

    Lauren
