Errata for Dolly Shawl row 1 of edging

A tiny correction is needed to the Dolly Shawl pattern that you might have already downloaded between Dec 1st – 5th. If your pattern number in the right-hand corner of the first page is H134-2330, then please mark this correction on page 3 in the Edging section: Row 1 should read 6 sts (rather than 7 sts).

This is what I get for making last-minute changes and trying to travel between computers at the same time. But nevertheless, I should have caught this earlier and I do apologize. I updated the pattern file yesterday afternoon (Dec 5), so some of you might have already gotten the new version (which is H134-2336). Anyone who has downloaded the pattern file previously, can also download the new version if you want to.

For those of you who have been with us since the beginning of the year, you might have noticed that the lace edging for the Dolly Shawl pattern is basically the same as what we did for the Lace Bug Bookmark.

The main difference is that I decided (at the last minute, lol) to substitute a single yarn over for the double yarn over (and thus why I originally had the Dolly Shawl pattern laid out to have 7 sts in Row 1 of the edging; but when the single yarn over is substituted there are actually only 6 sts).

The reason I made the substitution is that I felt the double yarn over created too large of a hole with the larger needles we are using for the Dolly Shawl (compared to the smaller needles used for the Lace Bug Bookmark). I’d love to hear what you think (either now or later when you get to this point in the project).

Dear Aileen, It has been a pleasure to serve you. Your encouragement helps me reach a decision to continue KnitHeartStrings in 2013 with another series of bit-sized learning projects. Best wishes to you for a wonderful, and knit-filled 2013. Sincerely, Jackie E-S

Is there some secret method for remembering the edging? I keep losing track of which row I’m on and it’s pretty challenging to rip this back a few rows (having done it a few times already when I decided it wouldn’t be ok to leave the error there). This doesn’t seem to be a 4 row pattern that sticks in my brain unless you have some suggested tricks for that. I’ve already copied and printed it very large so it’s easy to glance at.

Of course, much of the challenge is in the crochet thread I’m using for the edging (ran out of the shawl yarn — just made it to 7″ or thereabouts — and decided the silver/white crochet thread would look cute for the edging.

Perhaps it’s just a pattern that needs to be focused on instead of being knit while watching TV or making conversation or something. It’s really pretty, of course.

      Jackie:

It’s going better. Not doing anything else while knitting it. I’m knitting 4 rows at a time and always stopping after row 1. I’m a bit more than half way through the edging. The pattern is still not stuck in the brain but once I glance at the beginning of the row, I usually remember the rest.

The silver is looking nice against the pompadour blue fingering yarn. I may make a little tie string out of it to carry the silver to the front also. I know a faroese shawl doesn’t need to be tied on but, hey, dolls dance around a lot more than you might think and I’m sure my great niece will appreciate her doll’s shawl staying on nicely (without a pin, that is).

It’s been very dreary outside so no photos yet. Hoping there’s some brightening tomorrow so I can get a photos.

So rows 2 and 3 also have 6 sts? Does row 4 still have 5? Or 4? Not sure there are enough sts to work row 4 as indicated and have 5 left.

The only change in stitch count is for Row 1 as I indicated. (i.e. it is 6 sts rather than 7 sts, since I changed the double yarn over of the original edging pattern to a single yarn over). The stitch counts for the other rows in the edging are correctly indicated in the pattern (that is why I did not tell you to change them!). i.e. Rows 2 and 3 are still 7 sts. Because you bind off 2 sts in Row 4, you end up with 5 sts.
